The Chick and the Robot

Background:

In 1995, researcher Rene Peoc’h published a study titled “Psychokinetic Action of Young Chicks” in the Journal of Scientific Exploration. The experiment involved a robot programmed to move randomly while carrying a candle, and a group of newly hatched chicks in a cage.

The experiment had two phases:

  1. The robot moved randomly without chicks present.

  2. The robot moved with chicks in a cage placed at one end of the experimental area.

Peoc’h reported that in 71% of trials (57 out of 80), the robot spent more time near the chicks when they were present, compared to its random movement when they were absent. He suggested this could be evidence of psychokinetic abilities in chicks.

Task:

Your job is to analyze this experiment and propose improvements to test the hypothesis more rigorously. Consider the following questions:

  1. What potential flaws or biases do you see in the original experimental design?

  2. How would you modify the experiment to control for alternative explanations (e.g., heat, sound, or other physical factors that might influence the robot’s movement)?

  3. What additional control conditions would you introduce to strengthen the study?
